 Program Overview   study in america

Virtual Tour The School of Management (SOM) at The University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas) offers graduate programs that stress the theory and use of applied sciences for successful management and administration of private and public organizations. Graduate students can choose from eight SOM programs leading to the master's and doctor of philosophy degrees. Evening programs primarily serve employees of companies in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, while the full-time program serves national and international students. Three online learning programs are available for students who prefer the flexibility of online learning. The SOM also offers four executive education degree programs designed for working professionals.
   A Master of Business Administration (MBA) program offers a broad managerial education drawing on all business disciplines. Students can choose from four paths toward the MBA. The part-time MBA features primarily evening classes to accommodate working professionals. The Cohort MBA program is a full-time MBA in which students are admitted as a group in the fall and take all of their required classes together in fixed sequence. Executive MBA classes meet on one Friday and two Saturdays each month for 21 months. The Global MBA Online program offers a full curriculum via the Internet. Each MBA program requires the completion of 29 hours of core courses and 24 hours of elective coursework, which may include optional concentrations in a selected area of business study.
   The Master of Arts in International Management Studies program offers knowledge and training in international management, a discipline that focuses on trade across national boundaries, management practices within foreign nations, and management on a global basis. Students learn the fundamentals of functional areas of management, international management, and the cultural, sociopolitical and geographical constraints that affect business decisions. Past programs have offered study abroad opportunities in Asia, Russia and India.
   The Master of Science in Accounting and Information Management program prepares graduates for responsible positions in the public accounting profession. Students can choose from seven related concentrations, including financial planning and analysis, assurance services, taxation services, international services, management consulting, software management and information management. Graduates who meet the educational requirements may sit for the Uniform CPA Examination.
   The Master of Science in Management and Administrative Services program offers a specialized education in a specific discipline built around a core of fundamental business courses. The program consists of 12 hours of business core courses, 15 hours of specified concentration courses and nine hours of elective courses. Concentrations are available in information technology management and consulting, telecommunications management, electronic commerce, supply chain management, innovation and entrepreneurship, and organizations and strategy. Classes are generally offered in the evening. The UTD School of Management also offers a Master of Science degree in Information Technology Management.
   The Master of Science in Medical Management program provides physicians and senior health care administrators with the business skills required to improve the leadership and management of health care organizations. This program is delivered jointly by UT Dallas and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. The program requires the completion of 36 credit hours, consisting of eight residential classes plus a self-directed field study. An MBA option is also available in the medical management program.
   Both SOM doctoral programs prepare candidates for academic and/or research positions in universities, with nonprofit research organizations and in private corporations in the US and elsewhere. The PhD is offered in International Management Studies and in Management Science.
   The school's four different executive education programs are an important part of the SOM's partnership with major local corporations. In addition, the SOM offers customized corporate MBA programs and professional development programs.

The University of Texas at Dallas was established in 1969 by the founders of Texas Instruments, who wanted to create a research and development institution emphasizing innovative teaching and technological research. Today UTD offers undergraduate and graduate degrees through seven schools, serving a student body of over 14,000.
   The School of Management moved into its new 203,000-square-foot home in the summer of 2003. The building features wireless connectivity, video-conferencing facilities, a computer lab, faculty offices, meeting rooms and an executive education center. The UTD campus occupies approximately 500 acres in the community of Richardson, 18 miles from downtown Dallas. Surrounding the campus are over 900 telecommunication and advanced technology firms.
   The Eugene McDermott and Callier Libraries have a total collection of over three million items. The Microcomputer Center features computers networked for Internet and software access. The Activities Center houses three full-sized basketball courts, a 25-yard swimming pool, weight room, racquet sport courts and a gym for indoor soccer.
   The city of Richardson was settled in the mid-1800s by immigrants from Tennessee and Kentucky. The community is now home to 99,536 residents. Richardson and the Dallas area offers cultural opportunities in the form of concerts, art galleries, theaters and museums.

 International Student Support   study in america

The International Student Services Office (ISSO) delivers programs and services that assist international students at UTD. Assistance is offered with respect to employment, housing, health insurance, legal matters, banking services, social security, immigration status and personal concerns.
   The Multicultural Center offers support to UTD's minority and international students. Services include academic and personal counseling, career information and guidance, community resources and referrals and scholarship information, as well as a range of social and cultural events. New international students are required to attend an orientation program offered by UTD's Multicultural Services at the start of each semester.

 Admissions Criteria & Procedures   study in america

General requirements for admission to graduate programs at UTD include a bachelor's degree from an accredited postsecondary institution in the US or equivalent, grade average of B or better on upper division and graduate work in the major field, adequate subject preparation for the proposed major and satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). Non-native speakers of English must also submit a minimum TOEFL score of 550 on the written exam, or 215 on the computer-based exam.
   Applicants to SOM graduate programs must submit official GRE or GMAT scores, official transcripts of all postsecondary work attempted, a resume detailing employment history since high school, letters of reference from three people and a one-page essay outlining academic interests and goals to the UTD Admissions Office. Applications must be accompanied by a nonrefundable $50 application fee. International applicants must also submit a $50 foreign credential fee. After all application materials are submitted, they are forwarded to the SOM for review and evaluation to ensure selection of the most qualified applicants. The deadlines for domestic applicants are July 1 for a fall start, November 1 for a spring start and April 1 for a summer start. International applicants must submit their materials by May 1 for fall admission, September 1 for spring admission or March 1 for summer admission.

   Tuition for executive education programs varies and is determined by the School of Management.
   Graduate students may be eligible for scholarships awarded through the SOM. Scholarships vary in value and are awarded annually at the discretion of the funding organization. Detailed information is available from the SOM Advising Office and UTD's Office of Financial Aid.
   Graduate teaching assistantships (TAs) are offered on a limited basis in SOM programs. Teaching assistantships generally involve half-time employment and are awarded according to the school's need and student's ability. Applicants for TA positions must be full-time graduate students and must not hold any other job for the semester in which the assistantship is awarded. Applications should be made at least 60 days prior to the date of registration. International students may be eligible for teaching assistantships on the condition that they satisfy English language proficiency requirements.

 Career Placement & Opportunities   study in america

Students in graduate programs have free access to the services of UTD's Career Center, located in the McDermott Library. Services include career assessment testing and regular workshops for resume development, interviewing skills and the job search process.
   The Center is home to licensed professional career counselors, a resume critique service, career resource library of books and software and workstations providing access to additional information on career development. The Center is also home to interview facilities used by the many companies conducting on-campus recruiting activities. The Internship and Cooperative Education Program for the School of Management can also be found in the Career Center. UTD's Career Center services are also available at The School of Management's Career Management Center.
